Getaways for the Heart of Summer

We’re here! I don’t know if I’m alone in this, but every year it feels like there’s a little part of my mind that’s waiting for summertime. Maybe it's a carryover from school days when Summer meant freedom, maybe I just enjoy the warm weather, but regardless I always have this feeling of anticipation around the coming sunny season.

And then it arrives. And then I complain about how hot it is in my apartment and virtually nothing else changes. That is, unless I force myself out into the world. Even something as small as a trip to the beach (I live in LA so I’m lucky to say it’s not far) makes me appreciate the season and realize why subconsciously I’ve been longing for it all year.

So, my advice if you really want to enjoy the summer season? Get out into it! And while a trip to the beach or the park or a hike can do that in a little dose, nothing is better than a vacation. I’ve compiled a list of some of the best places to travel to during summertime.

One note, summer doesn't happen at the same time for everyone. That’s a blessing and a curse. But if you're held up somewhere in the dead of winter and need a reprieve from the cold weather, I highly suggest making the journey to a part of the world where the sun shines bright. And vice versa, some locations really should not be visited when they’re terribly hot. I’ll note what time of the year each of the locations I recommend actually experiences summer and when you should go.

Getaways for summer: Los Cabos, Mexico

Los Cabos, Mexico

Summertime: June, July, August
When to Visit: June, July, August

If you’re looking for weather in the 80s and as many pools and beaches as you can dip into, this is the destination for you. We highly recommend the Cabo Pulmo National Marine Park for any snorkeling fans. This is also a great spot if you’re looking for some all inclusive deals with the resorts in the area.

Getaways for summer: Chicago, Illinois

Chicago, Illinois—USA

Summertime: June, July, August
When to Visit: June, July, August

Looking for something a bit more Urban? Our favorite time to visit the windy city is when it’s warm. Whether you’re visiting the beaches of Lake Michigan or taking a River Boat Tour, you’ll have plenty to see and do this time of year.

Getaways for summer: Great Barrier Reef, Australia

Great Barrier Reef—Australia

Summertime: December, January, February When to Visit: June, July, August

One of the most stunning natural wonders of the world, going down under has two meanings here because you’ll probably want to snorkel in this gorgeous location. There are a few destinations by the great barrier reef, but by far the closest is the city of Cairns – the go to place for reef tours.
Getaways for summer: Reykjavik, Iceland

Reykjavik—Iceland

Summertime: June, July, August
When to Visit: June, July, August

Summer may be the best time to visit the northern landscapes of Iceland—especially if you’re looking for the northern lights or some lush volcanic greenery. We recommend Reykjavik, the capital of Iceland as a central hub to explore the Island from… and make sure to eat some X while there.

Bali—Indonesia

Summertime: January, February, March
When to Visit: June, July, August

The Hindu capital of Indonesia has seen a spike in popularity over the last decade, and for good reason. With thousands of islands, affordable prices and endless beaches it’s easy to see why many consider this a perfect summer paradise.

Getaways for summer: Florence, Italy

Florence—Italy

Summertime: June, July, August When to Visit: June, July, August

Those of you who are interested in history, architecture, or just gorgeous Italian summer will appreciate the famous city of Florence. We also highly recommend the city of Lucca (about 50 miles west of Florence and 20 miles from the sea) if you’re looking to get a little closer to the ocean spray on your Italian journeys.
Getaways for summer: Telluride, Colorado, US

Telluride, Colorado—USA

Summertime: June, July, August When to Visit: June, July, August

While this town may be famous for its skiing, it is stunning in the summer. Over the course of its history, Telluride has transformed from mining town to beloved getaway. This cozy destination offers a variety of shops and restaurants inside the town and an abundance of trails and trout streams outside.

The Caribbean

Summertime: June, July, August When to Visit: November, December, January

This one is a bit more broad, but for those of you looking to get some sun in the dead of winter, the Caribbean is a great destination. You’ll find that the waters are still warm and the sun is going strong even if it’s snowing back home.
